Big box stores are a source of great consternation to many micro-businesses. The prevailing concern is that these stores suck away customers, fail to pay living wages to their employees and do not reinvest as much into the local communities as local businesses do.

At a meeting of the Capital District Local First, Paul Stewart of the Community Loan Fund referred to statistics that show that about 70cents of every Dollar generated by local businesses stays in the community. Big box/regional retailers can only manage about 40cents on the Dollar.
